That’s the same processor I have. It’s a beast of a processor. I love it.

Nice design! It is similar to mine from 2 years ago. It is still going hardcore, I am about to upgrade to 64g of Ram.

I’d recommend an Asrock mobo instead of MSI and see if you can’t get it with DDR 4 as DDR3 is on the short train to the long adios.

You know the 1150 socket is being replaced with the 1151?

It should make 1150 processors cheaper, but that hasn’t really happened yet. Slowly, but oh so slowly...

That’s a good PC build. I’m going to build one next year probably, similar but I’m going for a Micro ATX case. Will be interesting to see what I can stuff in it, will probably need a few extra fans...

So far I’m here... http://pcpartpicker.com/user/deekster_…

Yeah, and the cost he is getting on that processor isn’t good.

they may well just stop making high spec processors for the socket and move it downmarket as purely budget.

Either way the new boards have support for faster memory, among other things, which if you’re building an over spec’d gaming rig you’d want

And here I am with my lowly i3 gaming rig that I built four years ago. Super jealous.

$309 isn’t that much... The only reason I’m still running an i7-4770 is that I want DDR4 when I upgrade and my computer is already so good that I don’t feel I really need it yet.

You will probably get a long time out of it, so you shouldn’t cut corners...

My current desktop that I built in 2013 and upgraded with a new monitor this summer (from dual Dell U2312HMs).

What kind of motherboard do you have that’ll take 64GB of DDR3 (based on the year)? Mine was limited to 32GB and I maxed it when I built it...

Ahh, X79. It should, in theory, go up to 128GB (though I think this does depend on the board). Huge price jump to get into those, though, which is why I went with an LGA 1150 processor.

Why not i5? It’s cheaper, only difference is no hyperthreading for 8 virtual cores.

X79 is not a huge price jump if you avoid the brand hype. When I built mine in 2011, early 2012, the new mainstream chipset was the Z68. Since I went with the i7-3820 quad-core, it meant the whole enthusiast-level X79 package was only a few tens of dollars more than an equivalent Z68 package, almost all of which was in the cooler you have to buy since LGA 2011 CPUs do not come with HSFs. In return, I got a platform with a longer service life, greater expandability, and a full set of PCI-E lanes instead of the gimped set you find on the mainstream platform.

Check out Jet.com - they usually have a 20% off promo code for new customers. I upgraded my rig from a G3258 to an i5-4690 for Black Friday, and with the promotions I got the i5 for $40 less than anywhere else online.
